Sorry, I should have elaborated. I personally think that an unborn baby is a life from conception and should be respected as such. Personally, I don't need the Bible to tell me that killing a defenseless, unborn baby, is wrong. I don't think that just because the unborn baby is inside the mother she can do whatever she wishes with the baby. In other words, I think it's a child, not a choice. I make no exceptions for other circumstances such as rape or medical reasons although I think some reasons are a little more understandable than others but I would like to see all abortions become illegal. I'm new to this so if anyone wants to propose debate guidelines for this debate I'm open to suggestions.

i dont agree that its a life from conception. i would say that its a life from the beginning of brain activity. whenever that is. im not that well versed in the development of the fetus.

i am inclined to agree with you about it being a child and not a choice but only in the case of consensual sex. in the case of rape the woman didnt make a choice. she was raped. my personal stand on abortion is that its wrong. except in the cases of rape or where there is a health risk for the mother. however, i dont believe we need to pass laws to make it illegal. we need to be careful about passing laws on issues that involve morality. things can go really wrong when we start legislating morality.

ooops. sorry, i didnt notice that this was in the formal debate proposal forum. i dont have the time or interest in this topic to formally debate it. im happy enough with chatting back and forth with others involvement.

again, im not accepting and i apologize for my brain fart.

You may want to consider reading the previous formal debates here in the debate forum, and the one in the Sec Web library involving Richard Carrier, and the myriad discussions of the issue in the Moral Foundations forum before committing to a debate.

Are you looking for a formal debate, rather than discussing the issue on the boards, to keep things one on one?

Atheist_Mama:

You can find the secular argument against abortion that Ladyshea mentioned here:

Jennifer Roth (http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/debates/secularist/abortion/roth1.html)

I've been involved in some general forum discussions from the pro-life at conception view.

I have found that if the discussion can avoid devolving into personal attack over mischaracterization and/or profanity...it will reduce down to personal view and the definition of "life" vs. "personhood" and exactly what material makes a "human" valuable enough to be granted "rights".

Pro-choice folks most often refer to the life process reaching brain activity as that which imbues value to life (Brain-ists, if you will)...while Pro-life at conception folks often refer to the significance of fertilization and take the genetic view as that which imbues value to life (Gene-ists, likewise).

There may be assorted variants to these arguments (especially if theists become involved in the discussion).

Good luck.

Thanks for the link! Very interesting to hear the pro-life stance from a fellow atheist.

I didn't realize how involved a formal debate is. I have schoolwork and a child to contend with right now. So with that in mind I'm going to withdrawl my request.

Is there anywhere I could engage in an informal debate with multiple participants on this subject?

Hi AM,

The place you're looking for would be the Moral Foundations & Principles (http://www.iidb.org/vbb/forumdisplay.php?f=61) forum. Just start a thread on the subject there and you'll have no problem getting a dialogue on the subject. [Edit: what Ronin suggested below will work too].

Since you've withdrawn your proposal for a formal debate, this thread will be closed.

Certainly.

:)

Please feel free to join in here at the Pro-Life (http://www.iidb.org/vbb/showthread.php?t=103010&page=13&pp=25) thread.

There may be some catching up to do if you want to get an overall feel for such a discussion and the twists and turns it can take...or you can jump right in as some have done.
