Opponents of anti-gay discrimination ordinance forcing it to a vote (http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/news/local/10567901.htm)
Less than two months after the Topeka City Council approved an ordinance banning discrimination against homosexuals in city hiring, opponents have collected enough signatures to force the city to either rescind the ordinance or put it to a citywide vote.
. . .
Petitioners filed the signatures for review by the elections office on Dec. 15. Shirley Phelps-Roper, a member of Westboro Baptist Church, which spearheaded the petition drive, said the petitions contained 6,333 names. The central Topeka church, led by the Rev. Fred Phelps Sr., pickets across the nation, carrying signs with slogans such as, "God hates fags."
. . .
Councilwoman Tiffany Muller, who helped sponsor the original measure, said she hoped voters would learn more about the measure before casting their ballots. She said many people who signed the petition didn't understand what it did and said they were tricked into signing it.
County Election Commissioner Elizabeth Ensley said 64 people asked that their names be removed from the petition after it was submitted.
Tricked into signing by Fred Phelps' gang? Who could possibly mistake his message? </irony>

Well Duhh! Topeka Kansas is not exactly the hotbed of enlightened views on human sexuality. They had to know that Phelps wouldn't take this lying down. He's such a dick. Man, he's awful. But you know what? At least he's consistent. God really does hate fags. Or more appropriately, Jehovah hates fags. You can't deny Phelps' logic - it comes straight from the old testament. Of course he's also a hypocrite who violates the other laws in the bible, but hey, we can't all be perfect can we?

Ugh! You mean that guy has supporters outside his own little clan? I thought rabid frothing homophobic a**holes tended to feel that Fred Phelps was giving rabid frothing homophobic a**holes a bad name.

Isn't there also an incorporation battle going on, I suggest there are other dimensions to this as well. Check the Topeka web site
'Loving God's Hate'.
"All things whatsoever arise from and depend upon the devine decree. Whatever happens in time was decreed back in eternity," Fred Phelps Sr. said in an interview at his church located in a tidy residential area on Topeka's west side.

Forget Petition Online. Sending a petition to Phelps' church asking him to stop hating gays is not going to accomplish anything. Sending a petition to anyone is unlikely to have an effect. If you have something to say, say it in the public square. In this case, write a short paragraph to the newspaper that published the story in the OP.

For what little it is worth...
Dear America,
I have had the great misfortune of studying the rise of 'hate' oriented preaching in the poorer regions of the States, and unfortunately Fred is not alone. However, I commend your efforts in asking other people's opinions and I hope you can resolve this issue in as dignified a manner as possible. My primary concern has come from the negativity that Fred and his misguided ilk are producing right around the world. Is it any wonder why people now fear, not welcome Americans now?
After the great loss of 9/11, our sympathies have been eroded and our doubts about the American dream are growing. Does America wish to live up to the Islamic sobriquet 'The Great Satan', or does America wish to retain a dignity that we once thought it possessed?
To merely accept that these people are misguided Christians and pray to God that he will, in his mysterious ways, solve the problem is no excuse. God's work is being totally unravelled by Bible 'thumpers' and Elmer Gantry's. Why oh why do the American people allow these sinners to flourish? Please get Fred psychiatric help, as to the others; their own communities must deal with their own dictators, in their own ways. Don't forget 'the Devil's favourite place is sitting in Church', and the Devil has certainly taken Fred to his heart. God bless the moral, and may God have pity on those who are seeking to destroy their own country in the name of Christianity.
A deeply worried Anglo-Scotsman- Let's see if it even rings any bells! Heuri
