the reason that they don't have a relationship with their relatives because their relatives who aren't christian wont talk to them because they are christian. my parents are fundamentalist christians. all of their non christian relatives still are cool with my family and never diss their beliefs. in my opinion, when non christians wont talk to their christian relatives, its because their christian relatives shove their christianity down their relatives faces and wont shut up about it. they are annoying as hell to non christians.
on the other hand, some girl told me at my school that her dad yelled at her for calling up her gay uncle, because her family wont talk to him anymore cause because hes gay. im not gay, but that short of gay bashing is fucked up.

That sort of thing is called 'ostracization.' It is a sad story, but true that many people are forced to ostracize, and indirectly disempower themselves by hurting the people they secretly sympathize with. You tell that girl that she has every right to call her uncle, that her dad is (and I quote) "fucked up," and that she should be careful around him. Not her uncle, her dad. Wish someone had told me that. :)

Seriously, you should try and reinforce the idea that there is nothing at all wrong with keeping in touch with her uncle, if you know her well enough to do so. I find it amazing and rather uplifting that she was willing to talk to him given the home situation you describe.
Anyway, I have an uncle who is a converted catholic, the worst kind. He never misses a chance to spout some christian or moral nonsense when there is a family get together. Very tiring

It probably does occasionally happen that atheists cut off contact with their theist relatives simply because they are theist, just as theists occasionally cut off contact with atheist relatives simply for being atheist. I'm sure this kind of shallowness and religious bigotry goes both ways. Now whether or not it's very prevalent is the statistician's question to answer. I would be hesitant to ascribe it solely, or even mostly, to one side of the matter, though.
