I have a church right behind my new dwelling, and its a "Universalist" church. Is this the same thing as a "Unitarian Universalist" church? or are they different.

It looks like it used to be a synagogue.

Only way to know for sure is to go ask.

Could be UUs, but there are non-unitarian Christian Universalists.

Aria, I'm afraid if they really are christians, I will melt if I accidently set foot on hallowed ground.

There really are Christian denominations that aren't the least bit threatened by atheists. Universalists are right up there with Quakers and Unitarians. I could be wrong about these people since I don't know them. But I'd bet you'll be pleasantly surprised if you ever visited them.

I hope you do. Please tell us what happens.

Tom

Ps To answer your question about UU: Back in the late fifties the Universalists and the Unitarians joined their national organizations. Individual congregations weren't required to follow suit, but virtually all did. Some just stuck with their old name. But some congregations have probably been formed since then using the term "Universalist". It's not a trademark, just a name that suggests a belief in "Universal Salvation", ie. "everybody is saved, somehow". A major improvement on the ethics of traditional Christian theology.

You mean 'universists'?

There's a difference between them and UU.

You mean 'universists'?I don't believe the Universists have any buildings, so I'm rather sure it can't be.

You might try looking on the Unitarian Universalist website to see if there's a congregation in your area. If it's sufficiently close, you could call the number they provide to see if that building is theirs or not.

The UUs have a pretty good locator feature on their website.
