This forum was designed for the purpose of helping to bridge the gap between IIDB and the main site, infidels.org (http://www.infidels.org).

Users do not have the ability to create threads in this forum-- all threads are created directly from the news feeds found here (http://www.infidels.org/wire).

All forum rules are, as always, in effect.

Enjoy!

-Matt

ETA; You can submit news stories to the Internet Infidels News Feed. Guidelines for submitting articles can be found here (http://www.infidels.org/wire/submit.html).

Quite nifty.

Not concerned about overlapping threads between this and the regular sub-forums?

Kudos to IIDB SysAdmin Matt, and II Newswire Editor AJ Milne, for their work in establishing this new forum.

Thanks for all your work!

We have not hammered out all the details yet, but it is my understanding that we will keep all Newswire-generated threads here in the IINF, and not send them to other IIDB forums. Of course, cross-posting, and linking to other threads, will be welcome.

It is a nice new addition to the Boards.

But (there is always a but), it is going to grow at an enormous rate (there are already about 30 threads in less than a day, many of which have not received a response yet and possibly never will),

Will it slow down the dicsussion boards in any way?

Will threads from the "main" fora that independantly link to the articles posted here be merged to here?

I recall that several months ago, when the games sub-forum was created, it was stated that if Board problems for loading and posting times remained, that the Games sub-forum would be the first one dropped. Would that still apply if this new forum starts creating problems? (I don't post on that forum, so it does not affext me personally)

Given that most daily stories are pretty much ephemeral by nature, will they stay on this board indefinately, or be archived if there are no responses?

Actually (second edit) , a further question, follow up stories on the same subject. Will they merge with the original article or be a new thread?

I realise that you are just bedding this new forum down and are discussing potential issues, so I thought that I would just raise a few.

Hmm ... on first impression, I like the idea. In my early days of coming here, I would always scan the Newswire first for interesting stories. Sometimes I'd start a thread based on one of them, if I hadn't been beaten to the punch.

Norm makes some good points though, about it increasing the forum size.

There are less than twenty newswire items a week on average. Considering PD has 50+ new threads per day (at least), I'm not too concerned about it slowing the forums down-- especially when something like this is more closely associated with the mission of II.

As for stories on the same subject, I don't see us performing any merges at this time. This is more an all-around general discussion on the topic while each of the fora get a bit more specific. However, we do have moderators in this forum so there is no reason we couldn't merge with other threads if it becomes necessary.

I suspect that the large number of threads is because the newswire bot has a backlog of stories that it's working through, not just today's stories, am I correct? And then after a week or so it should settle down.

Considering the number of threads posted at the exact same time that might very well be the case.

In any case, this is not expected to become a high-traffic forum or a forum in need of heavy moderation. As for merges/moves etc. we'll see how things pan out in the future.

As for increasing the server load, which Norm inquired about, I don't expect much impact from this forum. The Games subforum of M&PC is ranking considerably lower in relevence to the mission of IIDB than this forum. (Though the former statement is technically up to the admins, I would be quite surprised where it to be otherwise.) Hence, might we experience problems with server loads in the future, the games subforum is still the first alternative to be cut away.

You may want to check your computer. Clear your cache and your temporary files, then check the Newswire site again. Also, keep in mind that the Newswire generates the individual threads in this forum, so you don't need to visit the actual page.

Why do the stories all come out at the same time?
They seem to be posted only once a week or so, by that time a lot of the stories are old news. Wouldn't it make more sense to have them posted as soon as possible?

Volunteers work when they can. If anyone would like to establish a fund drive to pay for a worker to perform this task, I would be glad to promote your fundraising efforts. Until the II can afford to pay someone to work for us, we must rely on volunteers, some of whom have lives outside of this message board.
