Im July 1945 Vashti McCollum, a dance teacher at the University of Illinois, filed a suit against the Champaign School Board in order to stop taxpayers' money being spent on religious instruction in schools. Three years later, as a result of her perseverance, the US Supreme Court made a landmark judgment, banning religious education in public schools.
