But the wire editor still thinks angry, drunken leprechauns are just as likely as perpetrators.

The wire editor sounds sensible.

Why do people have such difficulties accepting random events? Why must there always be some deeper reason?

Anyone want to make a bet whether most of the Americans who believe the tsunami was caused by an angry god would describe said god as 'loving' and 'forgiving'. I'll put 10 bucks on yes.

Hyperbole. The question was not asked but inferred from the answer from those that have the view of an authoritarian god.

Do you know what pisses me off the most about surveys like this? They have to belittle atheists by using the word "only" as in "only 5.2 per cent of respondents call themselves atheists."

ONLY? Excuse me? If you look at it as a percentage, yah of course the number looks small. Let's convert this into a REAL number based on an estimated 300 million Americans. That comes to FIFTEEN POINT SIX MILLION PEOPLE WHO DON'T BELIEVE IN GOD. Even better, lets WRITE OUT the number....

15,600,000 Atheist Americans - seems big now, donnit'?

Regarding the OP, I think Ruaumoko (http://www.eq-iq.org.nz/eq-intro/eq-stories/eq-stories-ruaumoko.aspx), the God of Earthquakes, is ultimately responsbile.
