So, what's your typical response to this question when someone you've just met asks you?
Sometimes I'll respond "I don't believe in that stuff".
If I'm feeling philosophical (mainly if I've been drinking) I'll respond "Depends on what you mean by 'god'"

It depends on what God you're talking about. Jesus, Yahweh, Krishna, Zeus etc.

I laugh, and say "No, of course not. What a question to ask." And then laugh again

I usually respond by saying that I don't believe in invisible pink elephants, invisible pink bunny rabbits called Harvey or anything like them.

No one I just meet decides to ask me that question. Who in their right mind would ask something like that? It shouldn't come up unless they are passing out religious pamphlets at the time or you are dressed like Satan when they meet you.
Hey, I'm John.
Frank. Nice to met you.
So Frank, do you believe in God?
I mean WTF?
I think I would just stare at them for a good 10-15 seconds and then say something like "I am trying to figure out why you would ask a question like that after just meeting me. Do you usually ask such personal questions right after meeting someone? Don't you think that is a little strange?"

Joe. Nice to met you.
So Jane, do you like doggystyle?

There are no gods... sorry. Capitalizing him doesn't make "Him" exist either.

I've never had someone IRL ask me that question...I can't imagine someone I just met asking it. But...if in the future anyone did, I expect I'd simply say "No".

When I do get it it's usually more in that wonderful solicitational version, "Do you know your lord and savior Jesus Christ?" And every time I'm always caught in a work situation where I can't say what I'd like to say or drag out the conversation, so my response is always "I don't believe in that stuff."
Half the time they get the point and let it go...some times they have to leave with the last word though, about praying I'll find him. Doesn't he know how to use Googlemaps?

No one's asked that question so far, but I imagine my response would be "Which one?"
If they press on, I'd say "I gave up monotheism, have a nice day."

I try not to laugh and say no.

Mostly just a simple "No," though I may start asking which one. It's not really a question I get asked frequently, though.

It doesn't happen often, but when it does, my response is either, "which god?" or "define god."

If someone I just met asked me that, I would laugh and ask them why they would ask such a question to a stranger! It's never happened to me.

I just say no. A simple answer for a simple question asked, in most cases, by a simple person.

Actually, I live so deep in the bible belt, that I don't get asked. I get questioned and accused about not believing the RIGHT thing but never about not believing. The idea that someone wouldn't believe "Does ... Not ... Compute ... Does ... Not ... Compute ... Does ... Not ... Compute ..."

So, what's your typical response to this question when someone you've just met asks you?
It's very rare that I'm asked that question, and never by someone I've just met.

Yeah, exactly. At least that's how it would be taken here in France. Asking someone you hardly know if they believe in God is extremely inappropriate.

I think I believe in God. The problem is Christianity and church. But if God exists, what are we to make of these?
