Top US general says Rumsfeld is inspired by God (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20061019/pl_afp/usmilitarypolitics_061019193550)
The headline uses the word "inspired" but the actual quote is "He leads in a way that the good Lord tells him is best for our country," said Marine General Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
I would think that Christians would be a little bit upset with this. It doesn't say anything for God's military smarts or powers of supernatural intervention.
I know that St. Paul claimed that all government is inspired by God, or something like that, but I think he was just trying to get his troups to avoid pointless rebellion against authority. Occasionally, governments in the OT did wrong, and were overturned in the next earthquake or war, also viewed as instruments of divine purpose or wrath.
One commentator on a blog (http://www.themoderatevoice.com/posts/1161364738.shtml) that referenced this quote wondered if the reign of idiots in the Bush administration were like one of the Biblical plagues, and what else God might have in store for us?

General Pace is to the military what Justice Scalia is to the Judiciary (among others). They are high ranking representatives for the religious right and advocates for more government establishment of religion.

I'm reminded of a line ...
"If I talk to God, people say I'm praying. If God talks to me, people say I'm crazy"

Well... wasn't one of the major religious battle plans, to send in the savior to be captured and executed, then claim victory?

So if the idea of god being on your side doesn't scare you outright....my question would be. If Bush is getting his orders from god and the terrorists get thier orders from Allah and neither exist....aren't we kind of fucked?
Both sides are obviously delusional and there are millions of common people just trying to survive caught in the crosshairs of religious fanatics.

Peter Pace should know, his head is so far up Rumsfelds ass that he could probably hear the vibrations of the lawrds messages.
That guy is such a lackey it's sickening. He doesn't even really try hide it. I'm surprised they haven't appointed Tony Snow as a 4 star General already.
I swear, sometimes when they show the whole crew together (usually about to do some new damage to the constitution of the United States) as the camera pans wide and you see the usual suspects, I almost expect to see Rumsfeld at his desk and Pace's head to come up from his lap. I bet they all pass him around for a round of skull on a regular basis during those meetings.

Nice.
Let's not forget Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin, another guy with major influence on the "war on terror":
before a religious group in Oregon in June, Boykin said Islamic extremists hate the United States "because we're a Christian nation, because our foundation and our roots are Judeo-Christians. ... And the enemy is a guy named Satan."
////
Discussing a U.S. Army battle against a Muslim warlord in Somalia in 1993, Boykin told one audience, "I knew my god was bigger than his. I knew that my god was a real god and his was an idol."

I gotta say this ... the Army's testosterone level certainly has gone downhill since I was on active duty back in the 1970's. Back then you bragged about defeating an enemy because your dick was bigger than his ... of course, that may have changed because dick size is a matter of FACT subject to proof and disproof ...

Heya Ninewands,
If you talk to the grunts who actually DO the work, it's still that way. It's only the senior leadership that seems to (after having had all the Real Good Generals purged) be a fron for the extreme rightwing neo-con Reconstructionists.

C'mon, you folks know the drill. Victory=god's on our side. Defeat=still on our side, just testing us.

You'd think that God was seeking the defeat (or destruction?) of the US.

Or perhaps Rumsfeld is just a fall guy for God if he sends the wrong advice (oh, I didn't really say that, he wasn't listening the right way, etc...)

We should remember that German army belt buckles were once inscribed with "Gott mit Uns" ("God with Us.")

Fools! Do you not know. Rumsfeld is master of all things kung-fu. He needs no God. He can break Jesus like fine China.
