I was wondering how many contradictions there are exactly in the Bible. I've noticed up to 486 contradictions. Are there even more?? I reason I would like to know is because I am starting a blog devoted to the critical study of Christianity. If you know of any books/links that presents a ton of Biblical contradictions (none refuted yet), please let me know! Your input will be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Perhaps you might use the IIDB search engine to locate threads in this forum that contain "contradiction" in the title?

Is there anything immoral about you doing it for me?

This is a bigger subject than you seem to think. You have a lot of reading in front of you if you want to cover the topic.

First of all, note that the existence of most contradictions is only an argument against Biblical inerrancy. Most Christians are not fundamentalists, and do not expect the Bible to be inerrant.

I recommend reading some of Don Morgan's writings here in the II Library (http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/donald_morgan/), especially Biblical Inconsistencies (http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/donald_morgan/inconsistencies.html)

I would also recommend the writings of Ferrll Till (http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/farrell_till/). He has published a magazine devoted to the question of Biblical inerrancy, The Skeptical Review (http://www.infidels.org/library/magazines/tsr/index.shtml).

You can look at www.skepticsannotatedbible.com (not the .org - that's Jason Gastrich's commercial project) - which is an attempt to annotate all of the Biblical "problems." But you need to read it critically, and just use it as a start.

Be forewarned. There is no "contradiction" that has not long ago been "explained away" by an inerrantist, even if that means twisting the truth and logic past all common sense and reason to do so.

An exact number cannot be given. In many cases it is a matter of opinion or interpretation whether two passages are logically consistent, and reasonable people can have different opinions or interpretations.

That depends on what you consider a refutation.

Only if enabling the laziness of another is considered "immoral". :)

That's Farrell Till :) . The Skeptical Review is available here (http://www.theskepticalreview.com), and contains all articles available at the above link (http://www.theskepticalreview.com/PEMainMenu.html) as well as articles written after the change to a Web-based publication.

I'll take a look. But I'm not clear if the topic is just outright contradictions or also includes inconsistencies.

O.K. I looked. I think it would be much better if contradictions were distinguised from inconsistencies. Nor am I sure what constitutes an inconsistency. The synoptic gospels could be called inconsistent because they don't all relate the same events or relate them identically. Do those qualify?

An unsophisicated yet very readable and fun book is, The Born Again Skeptic's Guide to the Bible, by Ruth Green.

By "unsophisicated," I mean that she is not a scholar--just a person who read the Bible, was horrified, and wrote a 300 page book discussing what she found.
