View Full Version : What can or cannot be done in heaven

In an E/C/ thread about Kent Hovind, there was a link to his daughter's blog, where I read that she had lost her husband to cancer. Of course, she was convinced he was in heaven. The question arose, though : was he permitted to see her?

Opinions seemed divided on that one. Some people believed that their dead loved ones could see them. Others didn't think so, because apparently god wouldn't let the people in heaven look upon anything sinful. I can't imagine being happy without knowing whether the people I loved were OK, and I certainly can't imagine living in a place where I was not permitted to know that. Of course, this is assuming that the people in heaven are awake. Someone else seemed to think that they might all be sleeping until Jesus returned, which reminded me of Sleeping Beauty.

Still, the daughter was assured that her dead husband would be "having a blast". He might not be able to see her or be with her or anything, but he'd be having the time of his life... hey, could there be a connection? ;)

By having a blast, I assume they mean sitting around grooving on the vibe? What purpose does grooving on the vibe serve I wonder. It sounds like a perfectly purposeless existence. Odd that this is the existence that Christians claim gives them purpose.

These people that assurred her...I wonder why she believes them, how the fuck would they know what happens in heaven?

He's having a blast alright - screwing his 72 virgins!

Either than, or he's just worm food.

I doubt if he's thinking about his wife very much if he's spending all his time making sweet, sweet love with his savior.

If there is no sex in heaven, I'm not interested.

Besides, who wants to spend their day clad in a white robe, riding a cloud, listening to other idiots killing a harp?

Is it possible to commit sin in heaven?

Is it possible to commit sin in heaven?

I'm not sure if 1. it's possible, but things are just so great in heaven that no one ever would 2. it's not possible. The latter would mean that there was no free will in heaven, but with the former... if Satan could become evil, why couldn't people in heaven sin?

I also wonder about fetuses and babies who go to heaven. Don't they ever disobey or throw a tantrum or anything as they're growing up, or are they perfect little Stepford Children who do everything they're told?

Why do we presume that heaven is a place? Chrisitan teaching (from Jesus) is that it is here and now... not there and later.

I was always taught that Jesus would come back to judge both the living and the dead, so I have to agree that they are all sleeping until Jesus breaks the spell with a magic kiss.
I wonder if they have humor in heaven. "I just flew in from New Jersey and boy are my angel wings tired HA!"

With all the proclamations of an afterlife and eternal life through Jesus I disagree with Chasbourne. I think a reading leads the average person to assume that Heaven and Hell are believed to be real places so its only natural that somebody would think about what Heaven is like.

Is it possible to commit sin in heaven?

That would set off an eternal russian doll thingy of continuously dying jesi to create a new heaven and earth where another lot can sit by the crystal sea....must be possible to send a "sleeper" into heaven programmed to detonate!

Multiple universes? Multiple heavens, gods and saviours!

The "sleepers in Christ" scenario is more biblical. Basically, all dead people, right now, are dead and have no consciousness (with a few exceptions, like Elijah, who was taken bodily up into heaven). At the Second Coming, they'll all become Jesus-Zombies. Jesus will then judge everyone, and some will be cast into a lake of fire, while others will get shiny new bodies. Jesus will then re-jig the earth in some way and he and the new-body types will live there forever.

The traditional "dead people are in heaven/hell right now" thing is basically a Catholic doctrine with no real biblical support. People believe it because of Dante, much like people believe the whole non-biblical "Satan was a rebellious angel" thing because of Milton.

...others will get shiny new bodies.

I've often asked people with whom I've debated what these "glorified bodies" will be like, but have gotten no answer other than "they'll be like Jesus's body (with holes in the hands?) so we can walk through walls in heaven". Perhaps there are no doors in heaven?

The Talking Heads once sang Heaven is a place where nothing ever happensI concur.

If you ask two different believers what heaven is like, they will each give a different answer. And they will listen to each other's answer and not find it the least bit odd that their understandings are contradictory.

It's as if they know there's no heaven but, as long as you call yourself religious, it doesn't matter what metaphor of heaven you use to motivate yourself. Any mind control that leaves you able to stare right at a contradiction and pretend that it isn't there is not a good thing.
