This is both a CSS issue and a PA & SA issue so if a mod finds the need to move it I'll certainly understand.

A recent letter to the editor in my local paper denouced the evils of secularism and "moral relativism" to which I responded (and found another friend along the way with a similar opinion!)

Church from State (http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/news/editorial/letters/15927578.htm)

Keep in mind that there is a 300 word limitation on such submissions, but I'd like some input on what nuance I may have missed.

Steve

PS I received more positive email responses than negative which is very encouraging.

Great job! Your letter and the one following were a powerful one-two punch against theocratic misinformation.

Here is one response to our letters:

Moral Errors (http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/news/editorial/letters/15966566.htm)

My view is that Tim completely missed the point regarding the separation issue, personal worldviews and liberty.

To be fair, I'm also engaged in a rather lengthy and informative email exchange with someone positing the historical benefit of religion regarding social cohesiveness and governance.

I am greatly encouraged by how this person has settled into a more polite and civil discussion after some really faulty ad homs and rhetoric.

This sort of proactive social activism can really set the record straight and go quite far in reversing some false notions promoted by the bully pulpit.

Steve

PS I've submitted a response, however, I think that this news source has a one letter a month limitation...loosely applied.

He really does miss the point doesn't he. But he even mentions that there are x thousand christian sects. But then he goes on to say there is only 1 correct answer. *sigh* So if Sect # 14b/c27 believes something to be moral and Sect 36r/j52 believes it to be immoral, and there is but one correct and moral answer, which one is it? Why, the one Tim agrees with, of course!

Exactly!

My submitted response does not address Tim directly because I think that his own letter speaks loudly enough to expose the obvious flaw in his own claim.

Rather, I've decided to polish up on some points that my first letter implied, but did not directly state regarding standards, which has even caused an atheist/freethinker friend of mine to miss a valuable nuance.

hmmm...Looks as though I missed some interesting drama. I canceled my subscription to the Sun Herald because someone kept swiping my paper. Maybe I'd better get into the habit of checking the letters section online.
