Really had a wonderful time this past weekend. Sarah (http://www.iidb.org/vbb/member.php?u=32378), who is originally from East Flanders in Belgium, had introduced herself to the IIDB community last October. We had our wedding ceremony and reception last Saturday -- St. Patrick's Day, no less!

The ceremony itself was quite short, which turned out to be a good thing because it was about 95°F (34°C) outside around 5:00pm when it started. The officiant was Susan Bolton, a U.S. District Judge and longtime friend of my parents'. In fact, she and my dad were associate attorneys at the same law firm, and she was the first person outside my family to learn that my mom was pregnant with me.

Sarah largely put together the ceremony herself, although I made a contribution to the music: The song that played as the wedding party walked down the aisle towards me was "The Secret Wedding," from the Braveheart soundtrack. Sarah decided that Susan should read the famous poem by R.G. Ingersoll, Love, just before our vows. She also chose the music for our departure, "Love Goes On" from the soundtrack to the Disney animated film, Robin Hood.

I can't tell you how refreshing it was to attend a wedding -- albeit, my own! :D -- with no reference to superstition, mystical creatures or beings, God, etc. And you know what? Everyone I talked to agreed it was a lovely ceremony and a true affirmation of our love for one another. We then went on to have a great reception to boot.

If anyone else is planning a wedding soon or has a story to share, we'd both love to hear from you! Just drop me a PM, or post your thoughts here!

Congrats! Congrats! Congrats!

And, well, it wasn’t me. It was my son who got married this past Saturday, and it was a secular affair.

It was so poignant and perfect and beautiful a ceremony that I’m left rather speechless over the whole thing.

What I liked about it was how personalized everything was. They even shopped around for a marriage commissioner that they liked, and got a great one.

Most other weddings I’d been to were church weddings where the couple is told what to do, how, when, etc. Boy was this ever a pleasant change! Kudos to them. I wish I’d been that smart and capable when I was their age.

And I have a great pic of my daughter-in-law right next to the computer. Life is pretty good right now.
