View Full Version : The truth about food

The BBC has put up some very interesting video clips here. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/humanbody/truthaboutfood/flashapp/nonflash.shtml)
They are from their series The Truth About Food (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/humanbody/truthaboutfood/). Kinda like a 'Nutrition Myth Busters'
I've just watched a couple. While I'm not too sure exactly how scientific their little experiments are, the videos seem to be sensible.
The detox one is particuarly interesting for those who think the whole concept is probably stupid (I won't give away the results!).
Anyway, these videos may be of interest to some people here.

Otherwise people might be interested in the effects of diet on mental health (http://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/campaigns/food-and-mental-health/).

Amazing, shocking, incredible!
The metabolism one revealed that the fat one ate more and consumed more energy at rest. According to the dumdums being tested this is amazing!
The detox one revealed that eating the most disgusting crap imaginable is not actually beneficial. Astonishing!
It's nice of the BBC to debunk some of these housewife myths, but it's just sad how deluded some of the people on the program actually are.

They have a video of woman drinking semen! Whenever I see that it's usually shooting straight out of the dick, not being swigged out of a test tube.

Yeah, I watched that one too.
I don't think the test was very scientific...
I'm sure they could have come (no pun intended) up with a better procedure.

My impression was they usually aren't scientific, but they are done just to make a point. The ones I've seen they report on older and real experiments, and use their ones to show it working.
Makes it interesting :)

Aah I see. That actually sounds good.
I should probably be impressed there is a vague attempt at science programming on UK TV!
So are there lots of experts involved? For example in the detox one, there appeared to be a trio of nutritionists. But who were they? And what were their backgrounds?
For the one about veggies being weaker, was the diet for the veggies formulated by a real expert? Or did they just keep munching on lettuce leaves as they would have done before?

I'm not sure if there are experts involved, but in the one I had seen they showed their results, then they referred back to others "In an experiment of 100 people..."
Wasn't the veg one where they got an athlete to eat veg, and a load of veggies to eat meat? Then they showed the athlete doing less pressups afterwards. Awful trial, absolutely awful. Then they backed it up, though.
I recall one with a fat and a thin friend. They both said the thin one ate loads, and the fat one must have had a slower metabolism. They found the fatter one ate 50% more calories and when measured had a faster metabolism.
The one that intrigued me was that dairy products meant you just err passed more fat straight through you, twice as much in fact.

As long as calories in > calories burned, you'll stay/get fat, regardless of your metabolism. I know this is pretty well known by most here, but in general people seem to know shockingly little about how their bodies work.
Why did they show someone drinking semen?

Something about different diets making it's taste change.
As if any self-respecting man would change his diet so that his semen tasted better for his partner

The most important seminal taste-altering factor, and also the quickest, ain't food (that otherwise does matter a great deal), but drinks.
It's as anecdotal as it can be, but I've experimented this myself with several girlfriends and wives (currently waiting for Wife 4.0; if it sounds like bragging, trust me it's not), and that's what we found out:
- Very strong spirits (flavored or not) like rum (Stroh, anyone? :)), cognac, absinthe, whiskey or even vodka seem to be making the semen more "tasty". In only 1 to 3 hours from ingestion, depending on quantity and quality.
- Red wines (almost all of them) and sweet white wines have pretty much the same effect, but after a longer period of time, say from 4 hours upwards.
- Beer, of any kind, was the most confusing: made things worst for some, slightly better for others.
- The whole deal relates strongly to the partner's diet/drinks, too; e.g. if she eats/drinks something sour/sweet/salty before.
Sorry for not providing any links, but if memory serves, there are several products on the market that are pretending to do just that, make the semen tastier...

I must applaud scientifically minded members that are willing to go to such lengths to test this important issue themselves. Perhaps some brave soul will subject himself to a double-blind trial to genuinely put it to the test. I imagine that hiring a sufficient quantity of hookers would be expensive, so perhaps some admirable institution will provide funding?

Things like that happen when one has no religious burden on one's mind.
One tends to experiment for both fun and knowledge.
But now, since there was more than enough funding for placing couples in a CAT scanner, I would assume we could find not necessarily funds, but volunteers to... um... assist in any double or triple blind trial of this sort.
Since I had my fair share with their kin, I'd say that Med students would be more than willing to make a great contribution to science this way... :D

Normally I would be turned on by the whole semen swallowing thing...
But oddly, I am having the opposite reaction this time.
*Ew*.

A good question. Another would be, if the women made any off-camera inquiries as to who the semen 'came' from. I mean, they seemed to gulp it down with no question of "you're SURE this is my man's", just bottoms up... would be quite an evil prank to switch and tell. Or even not switch and just say they were. hehe.

My god, haven't any of y'all seen the famous "funky spunk" episode of "Sex in the City"?
Samantha's latest sexy professional, Adam, is great except for the "funky tasting spunk." When she refuses to go down there on a future date, Adam gets annoyed, and Samantha is forced to spell it out for him. Adam thinks she's just making excuses, so Samantha challenges him to taste it for himself...
Would you taste your own spunk?

Hmm, it doesn't seem to be working for me. Can anyone summarize the results?
