The pigeons of Asop, Rajasthan, have nothing much to worry. The elders of the village earmarked 46 hectares of land for them at one time. This land is rented out for farming to people by a trust formed for this purpose. The pigeon wealth now stands at some 50,000 dollars. The money is utilised to provide grain and water to pigeons at four platforms constructed for this purpose in the village.
Cutting trees and killing animals is prohibited in the regions inhabited by Vishnois (an martial agricultural caste in Rajasthan). The first bread in a house-hold goes to cows, the first helping of food that any person takes goes to dogs, and it is normal to find people feeding ants (Kiri Nagara - town of ants) in the morning on temple visits.
