Let's see how God stacks up ...
1. Absolute authoritarianism without meaningful accountability.
Check. "Then Jesus approached and said to them, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me." Matthew 28
2. No tolerance for questions or critical inquiry.
Check. "But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does." James 1
3. No meaningful financial disclosure regarding budget, expenses such as an independently audited financial statement.
Hmmm. Not sure. God might get a pass on this one.
4. Unreasonable fear about the outside world, such as impending catastrophe, evil conspiracies and persecutions.
Check. "You shall have no other gods before me” Exodus 20:2-3
5. There is no legitimate reason to leave, former followers are always wrong in leaving, negative or even evil.
Check. "Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, PREPARED FOR THE DEVIL AND HIS ANGELS." (Matthew 25:41)
6. Former members often relate the same stories of abuse and reflect a similar pattern of grievances.
Check. (http://iidb.infidels.org/vbb/showthread.php?t=172452)
7. There are records, books, news articles, or television programs that document the abuses of the group/leader.
The Bible (in print, audio, video, or web format)
8. Followers feel they can never be "good enough".
Check. (ask any Catholic)
9. The group/leader is always right.
"Would you refuse to acknowledge my right? Would you condemn me that you may be justified? Have you an arm like that of God, or can you thunder with a voice like his?" Job 40:8-9
10. The group/leader is the exclusive means of knowing "truth" or receiving validation, no other process of discovery is really acceptable or credible.
Yep. That does it! God scores a nine out of ten and is most likely a "potentially unsafe group leader."
