check out these links - my girlfriend always said her congregation growing up was fundamentalist baptist, but i never quite understood. I know her parents thought it was a sin to not physically beat their children but i thought they were just abusive independently of being independent fundamentalist baptist.

"Furthermore, the government cannot compel a Fundamentalist Baptist to commit any sin. An example of such a sin would be for a government official to order a Fundamentalist Baptist to not spank his or her child. Jesus and the Bible must come first to the Fundamentalist Baptist. Also, a family member cannot make a Fundamentalist Baptist miss church on Sunday, go to Las Vegas, or force a parent to allow his or her child to dance, or to commit any other abominable sin. "

My son's biological father was an Independent Fundamental Baptist. He somehow talked me into visiting the church he grew up in when we went to visit his parents in Alabama. I asked him what sort of church outfit I should pack. He simply said, "something modest". So, I wore a tasteful pinstripe pantsuit with a modest blouse and blazer. When I walked in I realized I was horribly out of place. All of the women were wearing loose-fitting, ankle length totally opaque dress jumpers. They looked at me as if I walked in there wearing something from Frederick's of Hollywood. I also had my old NIV Quest Study Bible. The pastor reluctantly shook my hand, saw my Bible and said, "you cannot bring that perVERSION of the Bible in here. We're old King James Version only." So I had to walk back to the car, leave my Bible out there.
Now, my son's bio father is Korean. He was taken to that church as a child because the preacher lived next door and was afraid that his mother would "indoctrinate him with Buddhism". So what does the pastor preach on that Sunday morning? The sin of interracial relationships. It was a nightmare experience. I was also a bit stunned that there were no musical instruments, no praise hymns, no choir and no windows. That church was merely a sanctuary with men's and women's single stall restrooms off the vestibule. When I asked my son's father why there were no windows he said because "people shouldn't be looking out the windows when they should be listening to the Word of God being preached". The music was very somber, hymns about hellfire and brimstone. No clapping was allowed and women were not allowed to say "amen!" in church. I hated it.

sounds like your independent fundamentalist baptist church was even more extreme than my girlfriends. my girlfriends would never turn someone away for their clothing, especially if that person was wearing an expen$ive suit...
