Doctor decapitated by faulty elevator at St. Joseph Hospital (http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/front/2052396)

An aspiring missionary doctor, who was voted by medical school classmates as the epitome of a good physician, was killed Saturday at Christus St. Joseph Hospital when an elevator malfunctioned, decapitating him, authorities said.

Hitoshi Nikaidoh, 35, of Dallas, a surgical resident at the hospital at 1919 La Branch, was stepping onto a second-floor elevator in the main building around 9:30 a.m. when the doors closed, pinning his shoulders, said Harold Jordan, an investigator with the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office. The elevator car then moved upward, severing the doctor's head, Jordan said.

...

Nikaidoh was a member of the 2003 class of the University of Texas-Houston Medical School, where he previously served as Student InterCouncil President, the student-leader over six schools within the medical center.

He became a devout Christian while in medical school, his father said. He became a youth group leader and decided to become a missionary doctor.

If God allows devout Christians to die like this, can you even begin to imagine what He has in store for atheists?

Ugh. I just rented "Final Destination 2" over the weekend; they basically had that very scene in it.

Holy shit. What a way to go; at least it was quick...

That lift must have been very very VERY out-of-order to let an accident like that happen. Moving when the doors aren't closed? Someone, somewhere's gonna get their ass handed to them on a platter over that, and deserve it.

Won't be moving to the head of the line, will he?

WTF? I thought that there was a safeguard designed right into the mechanics of ALL elevators that prevented them from moving with the doors not fully closed.

These ones which aren't like that sound like lawsuit magnets down there in the Sue-Ess-Aye!

I'm curious as to how he got pinned in the first place. Every elevator I can remember riding had doors that would automatically open back up if there was an obstruction.

not the time to lose one's head...

that's not the way to get ahead in life...

it's a shame he wasn't more headstrong...

he'll never be the head of a major corporation...

all joking aside, unless the elevator was flying by, how do you just not turn sideways and jimmy out? unless the doors were just crushing him. but even then...

its a shame really, i had heard that this doctor had a fine head on his shoulders...

sometimes though he was prone to losing his head when angered...

The part that is creeping me out is where they describe the hospital employee stuck in the elevator for some time... that part happened in Final Destination 2 as well, and the guy in the elevator totally freaked out. I think that would be me.

This has definitely been a Final Destination -style week. Not only do we have a beheaded doc in an elevator, but how about the guy at the amusement park who got his hair caught on a rollercoaster ride, which ripped off his scalp and flung him onto a fence. Not a good way to go.

In the elevator accident, apparently someone was trapped inside for about 20 minutes after it happened. I wonder if his head was inside. My, I'm sick.

 Oh, that's terrible...I wonder how his family can reconcile the "God works in mysterious ways" BS with his death. :(

Patient Advisory:

I live in Houston and have for many years. St. Joseph is the local Catholic hospital.

I wouldn't take my DOG to a Catholic hospital. I've heard too many horror stories about St. Joseph and others as well.

They'll let momma die in labor and save the baby, and leave daddy to raise a bunch of little motherless children that the couple had prior to this one. How thweet!![sarcasm alert]

God does NOT work in mysterious ways. That was a reward for being an exceptionally good convert. He wasn't punished. He was just moved to the priority list of heaven.

If God is this all powerful father why did he not intervene and saved his child.

disobediant or not, every parent will always saved their child from disaster or death if it is possible.

Whereas 'god' only intervenes to send people to heaven or hell. :boohoo:

Obviously God had need of his services in heaven. Maybe Petrus got the sniffles or something.

Or he was summoned to heaven so he could, in a discorporeal form, whisper inspiration to doctors around the world, thus saving far more people than he ever could in his earthly state! Subconciously, of course, so they wouldn't know what happened.

Of course, if it wasn't God, it must have been the devil. Damn you Satan! Damn you and your devious elevator schemes!

Everything's possible with religion.

There's little point in posting stories like this unless you like preaching to the (de)converted. One of the main reasons religion has survived this long is that it can be bended this way or that to suit any purpose. This is easily dodgeable stuff for a real fundie.

That's just disgusting and very unfortunate. I feel very sorry for the doctor and his family, and I can't believe that some of you are making jokes about this, even if he was a Christian.

Humor is cathartic and a perfectly rational, reasonable response to an horrific event. It's how a lot of humans deal with tragedy. Just as some humans get indignant and stamp their feet at the arbitary nature of the universe.

Indeed, I once had a discussion with someone on this who works in a particularly depressing field. "Black" or "Gallows Humor" has quite an important place to exercise the pain and anger so one can think straight.

He described to me a collection of cartoons which involve cripples--yes, I wrote it that way . . . CRIPPLES! Indeed, that is how the artist portrays them. Picture two heads facing one another, both on little carts. One of the heads has an eyepatch. The other states, "People like you are an inspiration to me!"

One shows a sheriff's pose that has surrounded an empty wheelchair. The sheriff says, "Don't worry boys, he can't get far on foot!"

Well, this cartoonist receives no end of hate male about his "insensitivity."

He is a quadriplegic. It is his way, to paraphrase, of dealing with the fact that every morning he has to have someone clean him, dress him, et cetera because he was a drunken idiot once:

"Saying your prayers could be a health hazard according to a report in the Medical Journal of Australia. Dr. Margaret T. Taylor traced a case of lead poisoning to the rosary beads an eight-year-old girl was in the habit of kissing. Dr. Taylor suggested that lead poisoning from the same source could account for anemia among nuns and other members of the Catholic faith." [Cleveland Press, as quoted in _True Facts_]

GOD SURELY DOES WORK IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS.

"A boy missing for 15 hours in a partly flooded cave was pulled out alive Saturday, providing a moment of light in the relentless gloom of the Midwest flood. ...'It was God that was with him and brought him back,' said his grandmother. The bodies of a 21-year-old female school counselor and another 12-year-old boy were discovered in the cave, raising the total number of victims in the tragedy to six." [Bob Burgdorfer, Reuters, San Francisco Examiner, 25 July 1993]

YES SIR, GOD WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS.

Reminds me of Dr. Drake Remoret getting killed in an elevator. He was hurt so bad that he was the only one who would have been skilled enough to save him.
