Howdy all. I rarely get into this Evolution/Creation debate because I don't like conflict much. However, I'd seen it posted somewhere that Darwin rejected his own theory before he died...
...is this a mis-representation of him refuting some parts of the claim, rather than the greater foundation??
... or is it fundie propaganda?

Even AiG has disowned this story (http://www.answersingenesis.org/docs/1315.asp).

Darwin did not renounce evolution on his deathbed, that is a myth.

even if he did, the theory has stood up to a century of critique.

Jesus said "My God, why hast thou forsaken me?" on the cross, or so the story goes. Isn't that the same thing?

The old "Darwin recanted" speil is only one step away from the utlimate in desperation "Darwin was a racist, communist, whatever". As though discrediting him means discrediting evolutionary theory. Usually it is an example of creationists who have run out of evidence which will demolish evolution once and for all.
I usually respond by telling them that I don't care if Darwin dismissed his own thoery, or even if he sodomized baby seals before clubbing them to death. THese things have no bearing on a scientific concept.
