My top 3 were

1)Secular Humanism (100%)

2)Unitarian Universalism (93%)

3)Non-theist (80%)

Though I have a difficult time seeing the 93% rating for Unitarian Universalism. I read the info on it, and I find little in common with it.

As I recall (took it a few days ago), my top four were Secular Humanism, UU, New Age, and Non-theist (1 to 4). Emode's Religion test told me I was a UU, although it might not have even had secular humanism or non-theism as possibilities.

My problem with this type of quiz is questions (or rather, answers) like:

Only natural forces (like evolution) and no Creator or spiritual forces. Or not sure. Or not important.

I "believe" in evolution, I am sure, and it is very important. So I click on the None of the above button...

DigitalChicken
August 20, 2003, 03:33 PM
There are some obvious flaws in the test.

Various answers are lumped in together that can have significant differences.

Question 1 has a choice "No God or supreme force. Or, not sure. Or, not important."

However, the three choices here bound up as one can have significant implications. There are several questions where "not sure" and "not important" is bound up with positive assertions of no god or naturalism.

Question 3 says "3. ORIGINS OF PHYSICAL UNIVERSE AND LIFE ON EARTH. Choose one" but one answer is "Only natural forces (like evolution) and no Creator or spiritual forces. Or not sure. Or not important." Well, I'm sorry. Its "Only natural forces" and it is important.

Afaik, JW's don't believe in Hell. So no torture, nonbelievers just cease to exist when we die.

I can't recall ever claiming that I was happy that people were going to hell or anything like that.

Also, I have no idea where you get the idea that JWs like the thought of the toture of non-believers. As pointed out above, JWs don't believe in Hell. They don't even believe in the heaven of which most mainstreamers claim is where Christians go to at death. They believe we are all confined to the earthly life--no soul, either.

They believe that 144.000 will reign in heaven with Jesus, the first christians and later a selected minority of such that were born before 1914. And they believe that Armageddon will come before the last of that group has died.

I noticed that as welll. The first time I took this test some time ago, I was a bit confounded by those types of questions. I thought the results I got then were a little off. This time around, for those questions, I marked the priority as low. It seems to be a bit more accurate. Here's my top ten:

# 1. Mahayana Buddhism (100%)
# 2. Theravada Buddhism (95%)
# 3. Neo-Pagan (85%)
# 4. Unitarian Universalism (80%)
# 5. Liberal Quakers (78%)
# 6. New Age (77%)
# 7. Hinduism (74%)
# 8. New Thought (73%)
# 9. Mainline - Liberal Christian Protestants (71%)
# 10. Jainism (69%)

I'm a Mahayana Buddhist and I really like the Theravada scriptures, so that was right on the money. I don't much care for neo-paganism, though, in spite of being married to a practicing witch.

It appears the test works in some fashion, because Magus55 got very different results from most of the nontheists here.

Mine:

1. Secular Humanism (100%)
2. Unitarian Universalism (93%)
3. Non-theist (78%)
4. Liberal Quakers (75%)
5. Neo-Pagan (69%)
6. Theravada Buddhism (68%)
7. Mainline - Liberal Christian Protestants (65%)
8. Reform Judaism (52%)
9. Taoism (51%)
10. New Age (50%)
11. Bahá'í Faith (40%)
12. Orthodox Quaker (40%)
13. Sikhism (40%)
14. Mahayana Buddhism (39%)
15. Scientology (36%)
16. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (34%)
17. New Thought (34%)
18. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (27%)
19. Mainline - Conservative Christian Protestant (27%)
20. Eastern Orthodox (25%)
21. Islam (25%)
22. Jainism (25%)
23. Orthodox Judaism (25%)
24. Roman Catholic (25%)
25. Seventh Day Adventist (18%)
26. Hinduism (15%)
27. Jehovah's Witness (6%)

Some of this makes sense. From what I've heard about Quakers, they sound kind of cool. I like some parts of Paganism, but I can do without the new-agey stuff. It's interesting that Roman Catholic is so far down the list, because I was raised as one and nearly everyone in my extended family still belongs to that religion.

1. Secular Humanism (100%)
2. Unitarian Universalism (92%)
3. Liberal Quakers (78%)
4. Theravada Buddhism (73%)
5. Neo-Pagan (72%)
6. Non-theist (67%)
7. Mainline - Liberal Christian Protestants (65%)
8. Mahayana Buddhism (53%)
9. New Age (53%)
10. Reform Judaism (50%)

There are 18 persons (including myself) with Secular Humanism in #1 spot. All of them have Theravada Buddhism within 6th position. Does that imply that Theravada Buddhism is much more secular than other major religions?

At first I wondered how they prioritized all the 0% categories, but then I realized they just alphabetized them. The only real shocker is that 26% match for Mainline Liberal Christian Protestants. If I'm 100% non-theist, how am I any percentage xian other than 0%?

Well, it's not secular since it is a religion. The reason it's so high up is that it lacks belief in gods or divine judgement of human actions, so it shares much with secular humanist principles.
