LEXINGTON (AP) -- Davidson County's attorneys have asked a judge to dismiss a lawsuit seeking removal of the words "In God We Trust" from the governmental center.

The lawsuit, filed June 24 in federal court, said the 18-inch letters above the entrance to the building violate the establishment clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Attorneys for the county sought dismissal of the lawsuit in a motion filed Thursday.

"The argument is that there are no factual issues to try, so the court can rule as a matter of law on the issue," said Stephen Holton, the county attorney.

Holton said the county's attorneys found numerous precedents for the use of the phrase, which was adopted by Congress as the official national motto in 1956. They argued that its display is patriotic.

E Pluribus Unum is patriotic. IGWT is divisive.

But it's just 'ceremonial deism' or 'de minimus', it doesn't really hurt or offend anyone, and it doesn't really mean anything.

Of course, since it doesn't mean anything, thousands of die hard jeebus freaks are willing to go so far out of their way to keep it there....

Keep us posted on how this one turns out, we seem to be batting about 500 lately.

Cheers,
Lane

Worldtraveler, you stole my post before I could make it. :)

I ask the proponents of IGWT, why is that motto preferred over E Pluribus Unum?

You pick the more nationally correct motto:

IGWT - not everyone in the country trusts/believes in the same god. A motto like this divided our country.

EPU - certainly we are one country from many walks of life. We acknowledge, and celebrate our differences.

Another no brainer that shouldn't have to be argued in court.

I wonder if they used the same arguments to prevent the "White Only" and "Colored Only" signs from being taken down a few years ago??

Yeah, that's just ceremonial racism! It's part of our cultural heritage! This country was founded on racism!

Wait, those last two are true.
