I think Buddha was quite similar in thought process to some of the European existentialist philosophers (Sartre??) in their notion of the self as an onlooker/observer/spectator.

Split off from the original (http://www.iidb.org/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33356&perpage=25&pagenumber=1) to simplify II's archiving. Though I'm flattered that premjan has seen fit to revive so many of my old posts, please avoid bringing back threads more than 3 months old! Jobar.

No, Buddha taught that the self (the 'small self') is empty. There may be other overlaps with existentialism though, in fact you could say that Buddha's teachings had an existential nature since they were about the nature of our existence and the best way to live our lives.
