View Full Version : Be very thankful!

The next time that the fear of death paralyzes you with a panic attack, just remember: be very thankful that religion is false!

Be thanful that Hell doesn't exist. An eternity in the "lake of fire." And to think that I moan like a baby when I merely burn my finger on the stove! There is simply nothing--nothing--more frigtening than eternal torture. Think about it! Sheer agony forever! Not even the likes of Hitler and Stalin deserve such a infinite existence of misery. Fortunately, there is no such place, so you can let out a great sigh.

On that same token, be thankful that Heaven doesn't exist either. Could you imagine bowing down before God for all eternity and worshipping his holy ass? Could you imagine being around all those fundies forever! That's almost as bad as Hell! Thankfully, Heaven doesn't exist, so we won't have to worry about that either.

I would MUCH rather not exist forever than to suffer these fates, wouldn't you?

So, whenever the fear of death rears its ugly head, just thank the IPU that the afterlife doesn't exist!

I second that. I find both Christian/Islamic and atheistic scenarios of what happens after death unattractive. But the universe has its own rules, regardless of what I wish, and evidence for life after death is lacking.

Personally, I'd like to live indefinitely (as long as I want to, as opposed to automatically living forever) in an indestructible form, and be released to explore the universe as I see fit along with whatever other dead souls I wanted for company.

But hey, not existing at all after I'm dead is better than what the Christians for some reason want to happen.

Hope they don't have any unsaved friends or family members. And if they do, well, I'm sure the pleasures in heaven will help them forget all about their heathen loved ones burning in fire.

What I find ironic is when theists claim god doesn't want robots and therefore created free will, yet in any description of heaven, robots seem the most appropriate inhabitants.

Yeah, that is a bummer. But since that is impossible, just think about how things could be a lot worse if religion was true.

It is impossible to live forever, but it is possible to live for a while. You could always get cryogenically frozen or something, and downloaded onto a computer. I think that woudl actually be pretty cool.

I think that woudl actually be pretty cool. There are those who think that being immortal might actually drive you crazy after a while. I think I see where they're coming from. Although, you'd be able to have quite an extensive library. Of course, you'd also have to be able to stop the body from aging at some point. I'd like to go back to how my body was around age 20 or so ... the strongest and fittest I've been in my life.

I've read some good sci-fi about people who'd been downloaded into a computer. One of the problems was interacting with humans. In a digital form, you are so much faster than humans, you are able to do billions of thing between each syllable which they are speaking to you. Even just a five minute conversation with a person would be an eternity for you.

Just more to ponder.

Is it scientifically possible to be cryogenically frozen as a means of living longer?

I'm sure there'd be a downside.

Do you think if I program a robot to worship god, maybe he'd let me outa it?

It's an open question. It's certainly possible to freeze yourself. Ongoing research try to find ways of minimizing damage from ice crystals and other factors due to freezing bodies. But for reviving suspended people? It would require a highly sophisticated technology to pull off that feat assuming that it's possible. Some estimation place that date to about 30-50 years in the future.

Basically the chances come down to this, if you die and you aren't cryogenically frozen than you're still dead as ever. If you're frozen and it isn't sucessful, then you're still dead. If sucessful, then you've gained a second chance for life. It's a gamble, either it'll work or not but meanwhile it can't hurt to try. Sadly many people fail to understand that and end up levying extreme and unwarranted criticisms on the science of cryogenics.

Have to say I find the idea of living 'forever' far more daunting than the concept of an eternal, blissful non existence. I feel lucky indeed to know that my atheism assures me of an eternity free of pain, sorrow, fear or trauma. In fact, it sounds a lot like.......errrrrrrrrr........heaven !!
