I am now posting my first message from my office (without a proxy, that is...heh, heh...we have some very smart IT people here on the fora :D ) since this thing (http://www.iidb.org/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59983) started early last month.
I'll fill you in later when I've got some more time.

Great to hear, Dr Rick! There really was no good excuse to block the website. I'm glad it seems to have worked out in the end. :)

Well anyway, sweet job man. :notworthy
Glad to hear you didn't have to quit and that you can go on helping the people in your community. On a very side note, have you ever seen the show Everwood?

Is that the sitcom about a guy addicted to Viagra? :D
Anywayz, sincere congradulations to you, Dr Rick.
My only hope is that the IT twit was "downsized".
The guy you described seemed like what would happen if Jimmy Fallon's "Nick Burns: Your Company's Computer Guy" (from SNL) got saved by da Lawd.

Does this mean the hospital isn't blocking IIDF or is that block still in affect for the rest of the hospital, while other sites such as Rapture aren't?
I guess I should wait to hear the whole story!

The ban has been lifted from the entire system; I and anyone else who has computer access through the hospital can now go to iidb, Focus on the Family, or a variety of Kobe Bryant sites freely from anywhere in the hospital or in my office. Oh, we can also still get the New England Journal of Medicine, if someone actually has any bizzare desire to access a medical site or something silly like that.
The IT guy left a message this AM asking me to call him, and given the obvious disdain he has for me ("I'm NOT re-opening the site...Period!"), I took that as a sign that something was different. Sure enough, I checked the web and found that for the first time in almost a month, I may once again enjoy the same rights and privileges as my theistic collegues.
The fact that IT guy called strongly suggests that he is still with the hospital, but I doubt he finally did the right thing entirely on his own. I have no desire to talk with the IT guy; however, I still haven't heard from the CEO, leading me to believe that he may not be too happy now, either, and possibly got a little profesional advice on the bad things that can happen to naughty CEO's and their organizations when they violate someone's civil rights.
The last bit still bothers me; I had always taken the CEO to be a reasonable and pleasant man, but I now have some concerns. My caution and references to discretion arose from my exploration of professional opportunities not so closely linked to this hospital should things have gotten really ugly; I'm going to continue that process as some of them look great, and I really don't need the hassle of being black-balled by my hospital admin when there's a shortage of doc's in my specialty locally and throughout the country. I didn't want to go in six-shooters ablazin' right now because I would have had the responsibility to reveal any legal or civil process involving my hospital to those looking at joining me up, and it was those concerns that lead to my obscure references about a delay in action. It would be a lot wiser to wait until I was comfortably in my new setting before opening up both barrels at the bad guys, should it have come to that.
I'll eventually hear what really happened (we always do in a small tourst town), and, as long as it's not violating anyone's privacy, I'll update you again.
Thank you all for your support.
Rick

Damned straight. IT guys are much easier to find than surgeons. You can write your own ticket almost anywhere.

Grats DR!
Don't sweat the silence by the CEO. What he doesn't say is less likely to be used against him. I'm sure he would have rather not gotten involved but whether his animosity is directed at you or the IT, is unknown (from the info I've seen anyway). Continue to be the valuable asset that I'm sure you are and everything will be fine.

So what sites were actually banned other than iidb?
I wonder if the IT guy wants to appoligize to you for being an asshole.

I would return his call just to see what he has to say. A little groveling could be a good thing to hear, or at least the apology he NEEDS to give you.
Although I have never had anything this serious happen to me on the job, when I first started the job I am presently at one of the President's secretaries (who is good friends with the girl I work with, and who hated me the moment I walked in the door) attempted to pull some bullshit with me that she had no right doing (and thinking I was meek, mild and would roll over - ha!) Well, let's just say I talked with my boss and he talked with hers. She had to personally come down to my office and apologize! Man was that sweet. After that she never even looked cross at me, but she and her cronnies couldn't resist making shit up about me behind my back! Oh well ... it was worth it just to see her have to apologize :D
Better yet, you should simply drop by his office and ask him what it is he wants so he has to actually be in your presence while he apologizes.

Or you can at least be entertained by the spectacle of him shaking his fist and yelling "Curse you, DoctorMan! You may have won this time, but I will be avenged!" before he escapes to his hidden fortress.

Call me paranoid....
It could be that they are temporarily opening up the pipe and formulating a policy to shut it down later. That might be why the CEO hasn't called.
I don't recall if there was a discussion of Dr Rick's employment agreement or IT usage policy at the hospital but.... Could it be be that there is a usage policy that forbids non-essential use buried somewhere and they are simply waiting and tracking Dr Rick so they can spring it on him later?

Hey DC! Surgeons are not employees. They are contractors that actually bring money to a hospital by choosing to practice there. If they blindside him, they are out a skilled surgeon and income generator. It would be a highly stupid move on their part. Dr. Ricks speciality is in high demand nationwide...he can write his own ticket and make the hospital look awfully bad, especially in a fairly liberal area where lots of wealthy celebrities live.
Never
September 6, 2003, 09:35 AM
Lady Shea is correct. I've seen a hospital's business drop drastically when a surgeon leaves. They (hospitals) generally go out of their way (sometimes to the point of ridiculous :D ) to accomodate them. To have him challenged for internet usage is absurd. See my shocked face that Dr Rick hasn't received an apology from the CEO in a timely manner on this one.
The hospitals I've worked at, administration would have been falling all over themselves making things right with him.
Not only is he not an employee, he is an income generator. That is of course the bottom line.

Dr. Rick if you ever get tired of that whole doctor thing I think you might have a future in writing. You are always leaving me on the edge of my seat with this page-turner. It’s like the new Ricky Potter and the Goblet of Infidels book.

This presumes they are acting rationally which is not necessarily in evidence here.
It simply doesn't matter if he is an employee or not. If they want to get rid of the trouble maker they might simply be setting him up.

If the IT guy is the vindictive type I would never assume that any thing that you type on a PC that you do not own is not available to many people.
A Keylogger can be installed on your PC or Spy ware so that every time you send an email, make a post or hit a URL the owner of the Key Logger will get a copy of it.
Be aware that Proxies and encryption are useless against key loggers.

Even though IIDB is no longer blocked, it is still an extremely negative sign that the CEO hasn't had the decency to give you any response at all.
Furthermore if you were any less than a doctor, you probably would not be in any position to dare stand up for your rights.
Excuse me for my totally negative slant, but this is a hardly a great victory for atheists, it's more an example of just how bad we generally have it today.
...well I had to offer a different viewpoint.

I wouldn't call this an unqualified victory; we still haven't heard what the fuck the IT guy was thinking gave him the authority to block this site. For shame! I'd personally say it's not a win without a written apology, and what you *really* want is for the guy to come to understand why he was wrong. Which probably won't happen.
Anyway, glad things improved some. :)

Just took a break from my C-SS beat. My goodness. I missed a dandy.
You make me proud, Dr. Rick...even if you don't buy into human instincts. :D (Inside joke.)
After reading the previous pages and this undate, I realize just how much trouble I would have made for myself had I been in your shoes.--- After being monitired and censored by your IT fellow, I would have seriously considered registering at a number of "bandwidth" intensive devout religious sites and contributing person viewpoints on them...and wait to be told that they were being blocked because of the extensive "bandwidth" usage. If they had not neen blocked, oh my, what a ball I would have had.
However, given the demands on your time and expertise, perhaps I simply would have recruited tolerant and trusted allies to use that identical system to work those religous sites and keep a running log of their usage. Having all the pertinent data in hand can often work wonders on administrators/petty tyrants.
Acting on one's beliefs with integrity and knowledgeable conviction is to be greatly admired. Good show!
