Yesterday I attended my first meeting with the PA Non-Believers. I just want to say it was really great getting to meet fellow Atheists in person. If any of you don't belong to a group. I encourage going to one. IF theres not one around you. Maybe even see about starting one.

Yeah, it's good to meet people In Real Life™ from time to time. Though, where I live there is no need to have atheist meetups, because atheists are the majority. I attend meetups of pagans.

Really? And where you live is "the Holyland"... [My irony meter explodes]. Wow. I would bet less than 1 in 10000 Americans know that the majority of people in the Holyland are atheists, if that is in fact true. In any case, that's not how it looks on TV. But then things are never the way they look on TV.

I suppose any mystique "the Holyland" might hold for outsiders is lost upon those who live there. That makes sense.

I went to a university atheists' meeting once, and saw a very attractive guy there. And he was an atheist. Nice. :)

We broke up after a while so I went to another atheists' meeting and saw another hot guy there. Turned out he was a devout theist wanting to see the viewpoint of the other side. We played ping-pong once.

Yes, about 70% of the Jews living there. Not the Muslims, of course.

If any of you don't belong to a group. I encourage going to one. I know people are different in their needs for connection, but I think finally finding the secular groups in my area and getting to know some other atheists in real life has made me so much more comfortable. I don't shrink back because of fears of ostracism from discussions like I used to when religious views/activities are the topic. I know there are lots of people like me.

Of course, this board has helped a lot also.

Howdy there, neighbor! Small world, isn't it? So tell me, does this group meet regularly and if so, where? I might want to attend once I am able to drive.

I am just recently starting to feel a need for this kind of comradely as well. Guess that's how I eventually ended up at II. The only local, non-theist group I am aware of in the Nashville, Tenn area is a Humanist group. There seems to be a sizeable free-thought group in Knoxville, but that's a little too far away for anything more than a monthly trip. There's also UU congregations nearby, but I really don't think that's for me. I'm sure there are additional choices out there in middle Tenn. Anyone local to me have first hand knowledge?

Hey, Tim !!!

I live in Harrisburg and work in Lancaster.

I'm a member of the PA Nonbelievers and occasionally make it out to the meetings in York.

Always glad for another freethinker to chat with.

PM or email anytime.

Be well.

I went to my first Freethinkers meeting tonight! It was great to see that there were more than 9 non-baptists in Jacksonville. I had a lot of fun. If anyone hasn't been to a non-secular gathering of this type, I highly reccomend it.

Mad Dogma, go to Atheists Meetup (http://atheists.meetup.com) and sign up with the Nashville atheists. I attended last month's meeting at Bongo Java and ten of us showed up. We all hit it off so well that we're planning to get together independently of the Meetups. C'mon and join us for this month's meeting. We don't know yet where we'll be gathering, but sign up and vote for a venue.

I hope to see you wherever we end up!

I totally agree. My husband and I joined a Humanist group recently and it's been very enjoyable. We look forward to the monthly meetings and have started a new friendship with one of the couples that had some common interests with us.

Until you start socializing with other freethinkers in person, it's easy to feel isolated. There is no substitute for real life interactions.

We've also had several socials with some of the locals from IIDB. In fact, I think it's time to organize another one. Where are all the friendly Georgia Infidels? Isn't it time we got together again? :)

D'oh! SharonDee beat me to it! I was just going to say if any of you haven't already researched it, the Atheists Meetup (http://atheists.meetup.com) is an excellent way to meet people in your area (if there are enough, though).

Edit to add: Welcome! I see a bunch of you here are relatively new. Enjoy your stay!

Kathy, I was thinking the same thing just a couple of days ago. You said you weren't big on museums, didn't you? How about a Saturday at Fernbank? Or we could plan a barbeque at my place, or whatever- I too feel the need to converse with my fellow atheists!

Here's hoping that the next atheists meetup in Pittsburgh doesn't get cancelled for lack of attendance - again. We only need five to have a meetup.

Please...please...please...

But not all of the Palestinians are Muslim, right? Aren't there xians as well as secular Palestinians?

Don't forget that if you are from a muslim family it's very difficult to come out as a non-believer. Muslims are worse than fundie xians about atheists and apostates.
