I find that there appears to be a pathological symmetry between the two sides of this conflict.

Both of them say "Use of violence against us will only strengthen our resolve."

Both of them say "We must use violence against the other side to weaken their resolve."

Both use holy scripture to back up this position, which makes it virtually impossible to back down or modify it.

Which means that, for the forseeable future at least, both sides are likely to continue losing people to violence.
