View Full Version : Decent Christians

Twice now, whilst doing psychiatric night shift I've worked with two different nurses from the same agency that I work through who are Christians and nice, reasonable people.

One of them goes to a Pentecostal mob. I mentioned to her my difficulty with the concept that good Buddhists, Atheists etc burn in hell for eternity whilst complete arseholes, paedophiles, murderers etc who become Christians have eternal bliss.

Her reply was that it's not up to her to say that that happens, the Bible seems to suggest it but she doesn't have to believe it and it's up to God. Apparently she is very quick to challenge the ranters and within her milieu I can easily imagine that she would be a voice of reason and tolerance. As for the rapture, she'll wait and see.

The other was a Catholic who had some whacky beliefs about there being Buddhist Masonic lodges and some conspiratorial stuff afoot in the world but Christ's death on the cross did in fact redeem us all and only the absolute worst of us will go to hell, no matter what our religions or lack thereof.

I find it very depressing that you need to call special attention to the discovery of "decent" Christians.

Oddly, most of the Christians I know are decent people - but then, I don't know many people I don't consider decent well enough to know their religion.

Hmmm. A person's decency is far more important than his/her religious beliefs or lack thereof.

Just my two cents.

I found it decent that there was some time spent recognizing the value of these Christian people for refuting the commonly asserted notion of Hell as a place for simple non-believers to suffer an eternity of torment.

That is the perspective I held when I read this post.

As you may know, most of the Christians I deal with have been arrested for very indecent behavior...but, this may just open that horrid "True Christian" jar of sour pickles that we really shouldn't.

Suffice it to say that I can appreciate the OP for the positive intent that it contains.

I appreciate that positive intent, but it's like looking at a star, and realizing that seeing the star means the sky is black. I find it depressing, although it is nice to know there is at least a little light to be had.

Conversely, I eagerly consume the realization by theists that atheists are good and decent people.

That would not be depressing to me at all...in fact, I thoroughly encourage it.

Ronin,

I'd love to believe you because the general tone of humanity will be higher rather than lower but I think that history shows that at least some true Atheists have been absolute turds.

I promise you faithfully that some of us true Buddhists are complete dickheads.

;) = sarcasm, my friend.

Everyone knows what it is to be and to do good.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, it's on me.

I missed it and should have realized.

That's okay! No worries.
