View Full Version : I'm back (vent)

Well, I'm finally back in town after a 10-day "holiday" visit with my fundie family.
I finally announced to everyone that I was no longer a churchgoer (I never said I was an agnostic/atheist) and (surprisingly) they didn't say much about it, except that they would be praying for me.
They did preach at me for the remainder of my stay and commented on how science and especially evolutionary theory was wrong (YEC was "right", and their arguments were the same circular reasoning and PRATTs that creationists love to use) and Democrats were of the devil (the GOP was God's Party), and how non-believers, especially atheists, were only interested in "serving themselves".
Being around fundies for the past week has changed me. Instead of the agnostic apatheist I once was, I am now a full blown atheist and proud of it!

Well Dayton, sorry you had to deal with that, but let me be the first to welcome you to the EAC. Your membership card is in the mail. ;)

Sounds like an annoying visit.
Congrats on becoming an atheist! Ha, only if that's a good thing in your book though.

Shudder. I think you'd be wise to do the Tom Hanks line in the Burbs:
"I'm not going to listen to this. I'm not going to hear this now."
Sorry to hear that your family is hard to deal with. I'll loan my liberal catholic family for a while if you want.... ;)

Breaking news from EAC:
The atheist's 'bag of tricks', usually dispatched to all new atheists within two weeks of deconversion, is currently undergoing a revamp. The current bag contains many rational, logical and scientific refutations to unsupported claims of theists, including links to appropriate web sites like www.talkorigins.org.
The new bag contains all these things plus a fireproof overcoat (beat Pascal's Wager today!) and a voodoo doll of Pat Buchanan. New bags will be despatched to all current atheists within three calendar months, while new deconverts should have theirs within one month.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

I thought the Republicans had become "not conservative enough anymore," and that now God's Party was supposed to be the Constitution Party (http://www.constitutionparty.com/). (Motto: "Bring back the good old days of stoning heretics")

Well, at least you didn't have to deal with some of my cousins, like I did over the holidays. They are fundamentalist MORMONS. Not only do I have to deal with the usual creationist BS, I get the added bonus of having to explain how the Book of Mormon can be debunked by any fifth grader.
Plus, there's no alcohol in the house, so I can't even get drunk to dull the pain of beating my head against the wall!

(Motto: "Bring back the good old days of stoning heretics") Holy shit. We, the members of the Constitution Party, gratefully acknowledge the blessing of the Lord God as Creator, Preserver and Ruler of the Universe and of this Nation. We solemnly declare that the foundation of our political position and moving principle of our political activity is our full submission and unshakable faith in our Savior and Redeemer, our Lord Jesus Christ. We hereby appeal to Him for mercy, aid, comfort, guidance and the protection of His Divine Providence as we work to restore and preserve this Nation as a government of the People, by the People, and for the People.
The U.S. Constitution established a Republic under God, rather than a democracy.
Our Republic is a nation governed by a Constitution that is rooted in Biblical law, administered by representatives who are Constitutionally elected by the citizens.
In a Republic governed by Constitutional law rooted in Biblical law, all Life, Liberty and Property are protected because law rules. They seem to think that they are god's party. The first duty of civil government is to protect innocent human life. AIDS and HIV is a contagious disease which is dangerous to public health. It should not be treated as a civil rights issue. Under no circumstances should the federal government continue to subsidize activities which have the effect of encouraging perverted or promiscuous sexual conduct. Criminal penalties should apply to those whose willful acts of omission or commission place members of the public at risk of contracting AIDS or HIV. The law of our Creator defines marriage as the union between one man and one woman. The marriage covenant is the foundation of the family. We affirm, therefore, that no government may authorize or define marriage or family relations contrary to what God has instituted. Parents have the fundamental right and responsibility to nurture, educate, and discipline their children. Assumption of any of these responsibilities by any governmental agency usurps the role of the parents. I could quote them forever...

The "Constitution Party" beliefs would actually be unconstitutional if implemented by the state (which could happen if enough fundies vote for members of this fascist party).
It is unconstitutional for the state to promote or recognize an official religion, which the CP plans to do if they are ever elected to public office.

We, the members of the Constitution Party, gratefully acknowledge the blessing of the Lord God as Creator, Preserver and Ruler of the Universe and of this Nation (unconstitutional). We solemnly declare that the foundation of our political position and moving principle of our political activity is our full submission and unshakable faith in our Savior and Redeemer, our Lord Jesus Christ (unconstitutional). We hereby appeal to Him for mercy, aid, comfort, guidance and the protection of His Divine Providence (unconstitutional) as we work to restore and preserve this Nation as a government of the People, by the People, and for the People (ironic, incorrect, and contridictory).
The U.S. Constitution established a Republic under God, rather than a democracy (false).
Our Republic is a nation governed by a Constitution that is rooted in Biblical law, administered by representatives who are Constitutionally elected by the citizens (false).
In a Republic governed by Constitutional law rooted in Biblical law (false), all Life, Liberty and Property are protected because law rules.
