Also contained in Guthrie's essay is the odd sentence "Maybe God can bring about situation L [i.e., reduce human suffering and premature death] to Drange's satisfaction, but the sacrifice is that the world only contains two people in it." I am unable to comprehend what Guthrie might mean here.
Guthrie is alluding to the idea that prior to the fall Adam and Eve were immortal and physically perfect, but sexless. One has to wonder at what point in the prceedings Adam grew a dick, and what he would have used it for had he and Eve not fallen. Is sex morally wrong? Is it a form of suffereing? If neither, what then did God plan to do when the immortal and perfect humans started to run out of space to grow food?
