View Full Version : The Problem of Evil

I'd like to discuss/debate the problem of evil. Seems to me obvious that the PoE proves that there is no omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent god, but even atheists tell me I'd be better off going with the Evidentiary PoE rather than the Logical PoE. I've read Plantinga's book; there's nothing there. I don't see any reason to give up my cold hard proof that god doesn't exist in favor of a probablistic argument that might be defeated by something like, "God works in mysterious ways."
I would love to see a meaningful refutation of the Logical PoE, even at the cost of "losing" a discussion/debate.

I've already debated this with Seebs at this location:
http://www.iidb.org/vbb/showthread....;threadid=66165
And also with Long Winded Fool at this location:
http://www.iidb.org/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=73382
I'd particularly like to debate somebody who thinks Plantinga
had a valid argument, but anyone who thinks the PoE can be
refuted in any way will be fine.

I'm in a debate with Gregory already, so this one can't start until that one is either over or forfeited (Gregory is overdue and incommunicado).
To get a debate, we have to agree on these ten points, so I will make suggestions:
(a) The topic of the debate.
The Problem of Evil (PoE) proves that a perfect god does not exist. ("Perfect," means omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent.)
(b) The participants of the debate, and what positions they will argue.
Wiploc for the affirmative; SOMMS for the negative.
(c) The scope of the debate.
As implied by the title.
(d) The length of the debate, in number of rounds (no more than 10 rounds per debate).
Six rounds.
(e) Whether statements will be made concurrently or in turns, and if the latter, who goes first.
Wiploc first, then alternate.
(f) The maximum length of each statement (no more than 5,000 words per statement and this includes quotations).
1500 word statements.
(g) The maximum duration between statements.
One week. But, I'll need accomodation for Spring break.
(h) The extent to which quotes from outside sources will be permitted (absolutely no copyright violation or outright plagiarism will be allowed).
Quotes allowable, within reason.
(i) The starting date of the debate.
As soon as the rules are agreed on and the debate with Gregory is concluded.
(j) Any additional rules or a debate format that debate participants must observe (subject to moderator approval).
Nothing comes to mind.

Sounds good to me...I dig the length and round limitations.
Let me know when you are ready wip...

Mods, if Gregory hasn't checked in by tomorrow, I request that that debate be either forfeited or moved back in sequence to behind this one.

Hi wiploc,
If Gregory hasn't posted by tomorrow then it will be a forfeit. If that ends up being the case, then we can start the debate thread tomorrow if SOMMS would like to.

Gregory has come back and it looks as though they're going to debate after all. They pushed their start date to Feb. 14th.
When wiploc is finished with Gregory, we can then start this debate.
Jason
P.S. SOMMS, you could always challenge someone else to debate, if you wish. :)

We just need SOMMS to confirm that he's ready. If not, perhaps he could suggest a start date if he's still interested.
wiploc, did you PM him?
