I'm aware that there's a lowest possible temperature at 0 degrees kelvin, but is there a theoretical highest temperature?
Just a thought.

Would that be determined by the energy conditions at the start of the universe - temperature just being one way of expressing energy.

Yup, just like quantum physics says the Planck length (http://www.physlink.com/Education/AskExperts/ae281.cfm) is the smallest possible unit of length that can have any meaning, there's also a Planck temperature (http://www.planck.com/plancktemperature.htm) which is about 1.4 * 10^32 Kelvin.
