I decided to put this in the Lounge to start with. Mods, feel free to move it as needed.

Somehow I ended up on the mailing list of the American family Association. (can't think how that happened... :p )

Seems they want to start a California Calling Campaign to San Francisco officials to tell them off about letting them uppity queers git hitched.

CALIFORNIA CALLING CAMPAIGN TO SAN FRANCISCO OFFICIALS

REGARDING THEIR RADICAL PROMOTION OF HOMOSEXUAL MARRIAGE
Our goal is to:

Generate between two and three hundred calls a day for an extended period.

1. From a nationwide calling base.
2. Extending over a period of no less than two to three months.
3. Beginning immediately.

Draw national attention to two critically important events taking place almost immediately in San Francisco (do not comment on these when you call):

1. A meeting of many pastors with the Mayor followed by a news conference.
2. The largest pro-marriage demonstration in San Francisco's history scheduled for April 25.

I may not have looked hard enough, but I couldn't find anything about this on the website itself. Almost sounds like they don't want just anyone to know about it...

Well, it seems only fair that opposing viewpoints be heard on this issue. :) We wouldn't want it to seem like everyone thinks like that, now would we?

Here's how you can help:

- Call Mayor Gavin Newsom's office personally. The lines may be busy so keep trying until you get through.
- Encourage every member of your family to join you in calling the Mayor.
- Copy this sheet and give to as many other Christians as possible.
- Give a copy of this to your pastor, and ask him to pass it on to other pastors.
- Ask him to encourage your entire congregation to join us in calling the Mayor.

The Rules of the Game - Our Christian Testimony is SUPREMELY IMPORTANT

DO:

1. Pray for God's guidance and wisdom before you call.
2. Be kind and gracious in your words and expressions. Remember that the person to whom you speak will not be the one responsible for the Mayor's actions.
3. Don't hesitate to express how strongly you feel about this issue. Words like insulted, outraged, troubled etc. are very appropriate.
4. Be brief.
5. Thank the person for taking your message.
6. Make your calls during business hours Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time.

DON'T:

1. Don't raise your voice, shout or get angry.
2. Don't engage in name-calling or epithets.

Well, goodness, that's awfully kind of them.

What you should say:
(Select just one issue about which you feel strongly and use your own words to express it. Don't try to cover all of the issues.)

1. Tell them who you are: your name and City and State.
2. Express your dissatisfaction with Mayor Newsom's aggressive promotion of homosexual marriage.
3. Let them know that you don't approve of redefining marriage.
4. Express your support for traditional marriage: one man plus one woman.
5. Express your concern over a governmental official breaking the law.
6. Tell them you want the Mayor to stop using taxpayer dollars to finance his legal battle to overturn traditional marriage.
7. You may find it helpful to make a few brief notes on exactly what you want to say.

You may phone, fax or email your message - or you may do all three.

Mayor Gavin Newsom
Telephone: 415-554-6141 or 415-554-7111 Fax: 415-554-6113 Email: gavin.newsom@sfgov.org (There is a dot between names)

Assessor Mabel Teng (Ms. Teng officiated in many gay marriages much to the embarrassment of most Asians and the majority of other Americans) Telephone (direct line to her secretary): 415-554-4999 Fax: 415-554-5553. Email: assessor@sfgov.org

S.F. City Attorney Dennis Harrera (Mr. Harrerra's was a chief player behind the scenes in advising the Mayor to approve gay marriage licenses) Telephone (direct line to his secretary): 415-554-4748 Fax : 415-554-4715 Email: dennis.harrera@sfgov.org

Well, I'll get right on that, folks. Sounds like I'd better get calling with the "Way to go"s and "Attaboy"s. Positive feedback is important.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP IN MAKING THESE CALLS! THEY WILL GREATLY ASSIST MANY PASTORS IN SAN FRANCISCO WHO ARE TAKING A STAND, IN THEIR MEETING WITH THE MAYOR, AND IN WHAT WE HOPE WILL BE THE LARGEST PRO-MARRIAGE DEMONSTRATION IN RECENT MEMORY - RIGHT HERE IN SAN FRANCISCO.

Pro-marriage, but only for you? Nice.

Background information - what Mayor Newsom has done:

* He has aggressively pursued issuing marriage licenses to homosexual couples.
* He has clearly violated the Constitution of the State of California which prohibits him from changing statutory law without appealing to the courts.
* He has directly violated the will of the people of California as expressed in Proposition 22 which legally requires marriage to be only between a man and a woman.
* He has vigorously opposed the teachings of our churches, acting as if he has taken the moral high ground in this issue, and as if Christians are guilty of depriving homosexuals of legitimate civil rights.
* He has personally officiated at homosexual marriage ceremonies in his office at City Hall.
* He deliberately concealed his radical gay-rights agenda during his campaign for Mayor in an outright betrayal of many thousands who voted for him.
* Concerning homosexual marriage, he has opened Pandora's box resulting in legal and moral confusion across the entire nation.
* He has rejected numerous appeals from his own church to end his immoral crusade for homosexual marriage - after requesting and receiving the blessing of the religious community at his inauguration.

The horror! The horror!

P.S. Please forward this email to at least one friend in California.

Heh. Oh sure, I'll forward it to a bunch of people. And I'm sure you'll get just the results you were looking for... just like that silly poll on gay marriage.

What can I say? I'm a contrary sort of girl... :D

<sigh>

Of course I know the source, but it's just depressing when you think you've written enough letters, and encouraged others to do the same, and then they come up with something which basically signs you up for another round to try to cancel them out.

It is nice to live someplace where the government is supposedly pro-equal-rights but they're dragging their feet on same-sex marriage. They've been in favour of legalizing pot for 20 years and have been in power almost that long with nothing yet. Time to write some letters.

I hope all of the "married" gay folks show up for the pro marriage demonstration! It really is time to move on out of the dark ages.

Sorry, nothing in California law prohibits the performance of same-sex marriage.

* He has directly violated the will of the people of California as expressed in Proposition 22 which legally requires marriage to be only between a man and a woman.

And it still is. Prop 22 does not prohibit anyone from performing a same-sex marriage. There is no penalty for doing so. The state may not recognize the marriage, but people do lots of meaningless things today, in the hope that they will become meaningful in the future.

* He has vigorously opposed the teachings of our churches, acting as if he has taken the moral high ground in this issue, and as if Christians are guilty of depriving homosexuals of legitimate civil rights.

They are.

* He has personally officiated at homosexual marriage ceremonies in his office at City Hall.

What's the penalty for that? Hmmmm? Got a statute to cite?

* He deliberately concealed his radical gay-rights agenda during his campaign for Mayor in an outright betrayal of many thousands who voted for him.

I'm sure all San Francisco politicians have to conceal their radical gay rights agenda in order to get elected.

What can I say? I'm a contrary sort of girl... :DLooks like you answered yourself. If you were one of us Infidels who "helped" them with their earlier poll, you had to provide an email address.

Of course you could use the email addresses they provided to say something like, "Hey, I know you're probably getting swamped with email from fanatic fundies, but I wanted to let you know I'm NOT one of them. I believe in the right of people to be happy, and don't feel that the 'institution of marriage' is under attack at all." etc. Add on as you like. Perhaps even alert them to what the AFA is trying to do, but of course, distance yourself from their POV.

Hmm ... I suppose I've probably got one of those emails waiting for me too.

I, too, got on their list because I voted in one of their polls. I kind of like getting their action alerts; they let me know who to call to voice opposition to their calls.
