Hi, I'm Jean Rice, a US Navy veteran (late 80s) . I am a member of the Military Associaton of Atheists and Freethinkers (MAAF).
http://maaf.info/
MAAF has a new UBB forum, The MAAF Foxhole... (in reference to "There are no atheists in foxholes"). It's brand-spanking new, a forum for atheist, agnostic, humanist and freethinkers who are associated with the military, either active duty, veteran, dependant or civilian contractor.
MAAF serves to connect military atheists with other military atheists, to council military atheists of their rights under the UCMJ and the US Constitution, to assist with EO and other issues pertaining to the military and religion, and to simply provide a forum to vent when your CO just doesn't get it.

This is a brand-new forum, we only have 8 members at the time I am writing this. So please come on over and help us get the Foxhole going!

MAAF is a coalition partner in the Secular Coalition for America (http://www.secular.org/) of which the Secular Web/Internet Infidels is also a partner.

Well, count me in as member #9! It'll be interesting to see how that board grows and evolves. So weird, though, it being so new and all. I got here in early '01 and it was already a large, mature BB and I just dove in headfirst.
FYI ... we'll have two new foxhole atheists in the persons of Daggah, and Ensign Steve, both of whom, as I write this, are in USAF Basic Training. I suppose you could leave PMs for them, but it'll be a while before they will probably be able to get them. Daggah, IIRC graduates relatively soon, while Ensign Steve is still in the early stages of training.

Thanks.
Ouch, looking at your post counts is rather intimidating sitting here at under 100, despite having been a member for 4 years. I used to post alot at the old, old Infidels forum (pre UBB) and had a couple of thousand posts there, but got distracted with my other forums. LOL, at those forums *I* am the one with the intimidating post counts! I really wish my old post-counts transferred.
If you know anyone who you think might want to join us on the new BB, please, don't hesitate to invite them.
I've started a "Yellow Ribbon" thread, for Atheists to list their friends and relatives in Iraq, and discuss our concerns without having people praying over them. I know my Atheist friends in Iraq would appreciate concern for their safety, but would be a little annoyed by prayers being said for them.

Do you have any room in your group for atheist municipal law enforcement officers?

I think it would be quite helpful if it was made clear whether the new forum is open to past and present members of military forces of countries besides the USA. It's quite clear that it is focused on the US military(and that's fair enough), but it's not at all clear whether or not it's only open to past/present US military and contractors, etc.
I have no problem with it only being open to those in/having been in US service(if that is, indeed, the case), just the clarity of such.

The *forum* is open to anyone, and I think that the police/firefighting is similar enough to the military that we'd have many issues in common.
Full membership in MAAF is restricted to military members/veterans/families of any country We have a couple of Canadian/UK members. We definately welcome our international bretheren, however, the amount of help we can give to international members is limited, we're not terribly familiar with the laws governing the militaries of their countries.

Thanks for the info. I just joined the forum(the 11th member, it seems), having served in the Royal Australian Navy.
