View Full Version : How to respond?

In yesterday's local paper, there was a letter-to-the-editor stating that the world was a better place because of Xians and the Bible. The author mentioned the existence of groups like the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. Her letter was guilty of the No True Scotsman fallacy as well. Oh, she also threw in the BS story from the Columbine shootings about the "She said yes" girl.

Here's the kicker, the girl is only 13, and the last paragraph or so sounded to me like it was probably just a rehash of something she heard either from her parents or minister.

I'm wondering how (or even if) I should respond. I could write my own letter to the paper ripping hers apart or I could send her a personal letter* in which I could address each point more thoroughly. I'd love to send her the Snopes link about the Columbine thing and ask her if she's heard of something called the Crusades or the Salem Witch Trials. I would be polite of course, as I don't go out of my way to ruin teenager's days.

Thanks to countless other threads here, I don't need help composing a reply, but I'll post her letter here if anyone wants to see it.

Or should I just let it go? Part of me feels like it, but it's just so sad to see a youngster so deluded, or at least ignorant of many other facts.

So, whatcha think?

*her last name is not very common and there are only two in the phone book

Oh, do respond! If you had a letter saying that the world is a worse place because of Christians published, that newspaper would have sacks of post from church groups.

But I'd be very wary of sending a reply to her home address, seeings as she is only 13, but definately do send one to the paper.

Do definitely respond to that letter! She needs to be educated and she might as well get an early start in critical thinking skills. Though I suggest that you send the letter to the newspaper only. The girl's parents might not appreciate a stranger sending a letter to a 13-year old girl's address especially if the letter's refuting Christianity. Though, if the newspaper doesn't publish the letter, you could still ask the newspaper to send her the letter.

Man, I'd love to introduce that girl to Tricia.
